Jacek Markunas was an abstract painter. He studied at the Academy of fine Arts in Lodz, under the supervision of Roman Modzelewski, obtaining a Master’s degree in painting in 1981.

Through years of creating abstract worlds he managed to develop his visual language and find his own, unique style of expression. He was interested in using colours and forms to create a non- representational images. His style changed through the years, from the sophisticated - full of symbols compositions - to very simple aesthetic forms. He loved using lively colours and simple forms, creating something more than the sum of its parts.

Jacek Markunas had many exhibitions. He enjoyed showing his paintings to other people and observing their reaction to his art. When people had problems with understanding his paintings and asked him, for example, what a red square on white surface meant, he always replied that it depended on your imagination because a painting is an object of thoughtful contemplation in its own right.

Art always meant a lot to him. It was much more important than the ‘real’ world because it was always more spiritual and powerful. He believed that only art can change the world and even abstract paintings hidden powerful messages because of showing alternative possibilities, different consciousness and helping people stretch their imagination.
